Nativity Christmas Card with a Detachable Ornament | Pixie Pust Designs

Today, I’m sharing a special project featuring a unique Christmas card that doubles as a keepsake ornament! This card is not only a beautiful greeting but also an ornament for your recipient to hang on their Christmas tree, making it a delightful holiday surprise. Let’s take a closer look at the products I used and the creative steps behind this dual-purpose card.

Hexagon and Nativity Ornament Add-On Die Bundle - Dies

Gingy Dress Up Stamp Set - for the sentiment

Cardstock - in various colors

VersaFine ONYX BLACK Ink - ink

Red ribbon - for the bow

Silver cord - for hanging

Prima Glitter - Star

The main feature of this card is the Nativity scene ornament, created using the Hexagon and Nativity Ornament Add-On Die Bundle. I loved how this die set allowed me to craft a detailed silhouette of Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus within the stable. The hexagonal shape brings a modern touch to this classic holiday scene, and it works beautifully as both a card focal point and a tree ornament.

To keep the ornament thin enough for easy mailing, I used fewer layers than a typical standalone ornament, ensuring it remains lightweight while still having a finished look.

Step-by-Step Process:

1. Die-Cutting the Ornament: Hexagon and Nativity Ornament Add-On Die Bundle dies, I cut out the main frames for the ornament. For the layered look, I trimmed the tabs from the baby Jesus layer, then stacked and glued the layers together to add depth without bulk.

2. Adding a Sentiment: The sentiment "From Our House to Yours" from the Gingy Dress Up Stamp Set was stamped in VersaFine ONYX BLACK Ink onto a vellum layer. I chose this sentiment because it beautifully captures the spirit of sharing love and peace with family and friends during the holiday season. Be sure to let the ink dry completely on vellum to avoid smudging.

3. Assembly: I adhered the vellum layer with the sentiment to the back of the hexagon Nativity scene, centering it for a soft, diffused background effect. After trimming the vellum to match the hexagon shape, I added another die-cut layer behind it to create a polished back. For a clean finish on the front, I attached the hexagon frame from the Hexagon Ornament Die set, and sandwiched the silver cord in between layers for a secure hanging loop.

4. Ornament Details: To add a touch of sparkle, I applied glue to the star and sprinkled it with Prisma fine glitter, adding a subtle, festive shimmer. The silver cord was threaded through the top, and a red bow was added for an extra holiday touch. The ornament is attached to the card base with a glue dot, making it easy to detach for hanging on the Christmas tree.

5. Final Touches: The completed ornament is ready to be displayed on a card that transforms into a cherished Christmas decoration. By making this ornament detachable, the card offers a gift within a gift, creating a joyful surprise that can be enjoyed year after year.

One of the best parts of this card is that after receiving it, the recipient can remove the ornament and hang it on their tree. This card design not only brings joy in the moment but also creates a lasting memory that can be cherished each year.

This card showcases the glamorous holiday spirit, complete with a marquee message, stage curtains, and a trio of high-kicking dancers. Let’s take a closer look at how I brought this holiday scene to life.

CARD RECIPE

• SA264 HA + RT Color Layering Stage Curtain Stencils: Used to create the beautifully blended stage backdrop.
• DF186 HA + RT Stage Curtain Fancy Die (F): For the dramatic stage curtain scene.
• SB416 HA + RT Holiday Marquee Messages Bundle (C): Stamps and dies for that bold “Merry Christmas” marquee sign.
• SB414 HA + RT Sparkling Holiday Stage Bundle (E): Featuring stamps and dies for the Rockettes-inspired dancers and coordinating holiday elements.
• India Black Ink: To stamp all the main images and details.
• Copic Markers: For coloring the dancers and stage props.
• Liquid Applique: (older product) Added to the dancers' costumes for the fluffy white Santa fur trim. Another option PW121 White Puff Embossing Powder
• Gel Pens: Gold, sparkle, and white for small highlights and added sparkle details.
• Foam Adhesive: To add dimension to various elements on the card, making the stage and marquee pop.
• Distress Oxide Inks: For ink blending the vibrant background.

How I Created the Card:

Creating the Stage: The star of this card is the DF186 HA + RT Stage Curtain Fancy Die, which cuts a beautiful stage curtain, framing the scene. I used the SA264 HA + RT Color Layering Stage Curtain Stencils to ink blend the stage with rich reds and oranges, giving it that theater feel. The distress oxide inks were perfect for blending out a smooth and vibrant backdrop.

Stamping & Coloring the Dancers: I stamped the dancers from the SB414 HA + RT Sparkling Holiday Stage Bundle using India Black Ink. These fabulous ladies were brought to life with Copic Markers, keeping their costumes classic in red and white. I added dimension to their Santa hats and outfits with Liquid Applique, which puffed up to create a fluffy texture once heat set.

Spotlights and Marquee Sign: The SB416 HA + RT Holiday Marquee Messages Bundle was perfect for the large, bold “Merry Christmas” sign. After die-cutting the marquee, I colored it in and added small details with a gold gel pen to mimic the lights around the sign. I also glued down two small gems to act as spotlights shining down on the stage.

Finishing Touches: I used foam adhesive to pop up the dancers and marquee for added dimension. For extra sparkle, I used a sparkle gel pen on small details like the wreath and presents, and added highlights with a white gel pen to give the scene a polished look.

Inside: To complete this card, I used a sentiment from the SB414 HA + RT Sparkling Holiday Stage Bundle.

This Rockettes-inspired card brings a fun and festive holiday spirit, showcasing the wonderful products from the Hero Arts + Ralph Tyndall Fall 2024 Release. The stage curtain die and layered stencils really brought depth to the scene, while the marquee and dancers give it that Broadway Christmas feel. Reindeer Games: Crafting a Fun and Festive Christmas Card | Picket Fence Studios

Card Design Breakdown

For this card, the star of the show is the Reindeer at Play Stamp and Die Set. These little reindeer images are filled with personality and bring so much whimsy to a holiday card. I colored each of the images with Copic markers, giving them bright scarves and rosy cheeks to match their playful expressions. To make Rudolph stand out, I added a red gem from the North Pole Gem Mix to his nose for that iconic holiday sparkle!

The background features the A2 Simple Plaid Cover Plate Die, adding a clean and subtle texture behind the reindeer. I love the classic plaid design because it provides the perfect backdrop without taking away from the focal images. To frame everything, I used the A2 Saying Hello Cover Plate Die, which is an older product but still one of my favorites for creating defined sections on a card front.

Tip for Quick and Easy Stamping

One of my favorite time-saving tricks when working with multiple images is to stamp them all at once. Rather than removing each stamp from the carrier sheet, I placed the entire set face down in my MISTI tool, keeping them on the carrier sheet. I secured them using the PFS Paper Inking Palette. Then, I positioned my cardstock over the stamps and taped it to the MISTI door. This allowed me to ink up and stamp all the images in one go using the PFS Black Hybrid Ink Pad.

Once the images were stamped, I left the paper secured to the MISTI door while I colored them with Copic markers. After all the coloring was done, I restamped the images to get a clean, crisp black outline, which really makes them pop. Then, I die-cut the images with the coordinating die set.

Fun Snow Details with Paper Glaze

To create a wintery scene, I wanted to add some snow underneath the reindeer. I mixed a little Arctic Fox Paper Glaze in a small plastic baggy and piped on some snow mounds for dimension. While the glaze was still wet, I sprinkled a bit of fine glitter on top for an extra frosty look. It’s such a simple touch but adds so much depth and sparkle to the card!

Final Touches

For the sleigh, I couldn’t resist adding more festive details! The Oh What Fun Sequin Mix includes some adorable Christmas pinwheels, which I placed in the sleigh to give it a cheerful and festive look. These little touches help bring everything together, adding pops of color and shine that elevate the overall design.

To create the Candy Cane Heart, I inverted one of the candy canes, using the "opposite side" of the die-cut to fashion a captivating mirror image. I then glued the ends together in the shape of a heart. For a touch of added radiance, I brought out my glitter gel pen and adorned the candy canes with extra stripes, adding a sparkle that truly elevates the design.

The sentiment was done by using the Hot Foil System and the Speckled Prism Glimmer Hot Foil Roll.

But the magic doesn't stop there. Elevate your card with those extra details that make all the difference. With a white gel pen, I meticulously added snow, achieving a frosty, winter feel. Blending ink on the leaves added depth and dimension to the design, while Glossy Accents on the berries, topped with Prisma sparkle, bestowed a captivating brilliance. These small but essential embellishments are the secret to transforming an ordinary card into an extraordinary work of art.
