A Little Life Update: My Crafting Has Taken a New Direction

Hello crafty friends!

It feels a little strange sitting down to write this post because it has been far too long since I’ve shared a proper update here on I Love Doing All Things Crafty. If you’ve been wondering where I’ve been, what I’ve been making, or why things have been a little quieter around here, I thought it was finally time to catch you up.

The short answer is… life happened!

While I haven’t been making nearly as many cards as I used to, I definitely haven’t stopped crafting. In fact, my creativity has taken me in a completely different direction this past year.

A Year of Seeing Things Differently

It has now been more than a year since my cornea transplant, and I’m incredibly grateful to say that I can see so much better than I could before. My vision still isn’t perfect, and my left eye continues to have its limitations, but the improvement has been life-changing.

One of the things I’ve had to learn along the way is to listen to my eyes. Cardmaking, especially the detailed cardmaking I love, can be surprisingly demanding. Coloring, stamping, die cutting, working with tiny details, photographing projects, editing photos and spending hours looking closely at a project can all add up. So, for now, making cards is still more strain than my eyes really want.

That has meant taking a step back from the kind of crafting that has filled these pages for so many years. But that doesn't mean I stopped creating.

A New Job, A New Routine

There has been another big change in my life too. I started a new job at the same hospital where I have worked for the past 28 years, and it has been a much better fit for me, both physically and mentally.

I’m also no longer working shift work.

For years, shift work was actually one of the things that made crafting possible for me. Having days off during the week gave me chunks of time to disappear into my craft room, make cards, take photographs and write blog posts.

Now I work days. And honestly, when I get home, I want to spend that time with my family. I also work more shifts than I did previously, so there simply isn't as much free time as there once was.

My priorities have shifted a little, and I’m okay with that.

Instead of feeling guilty that I’m not creating cards every week, I’ve been reminding myself that creativity doesn't have to look the same forever.

I Haven't Stopped Crafting!

This past year, my creative energy has found a new home in something very close to my heart: our Portuguese community.

I’ve been volunteering my time and my crafty talents to help decorate for Portuguese community parties and events, and I have absolutely loved it.

There is something incredibly special about using the things I’ve learned through years of crafting—designing, building, painting, decorating, problem-solving and simply figuring out how to make an idea come to life—and using those skills to help bring our community celebrations to life.

It has reminded me that I don't necessarily need to be making a card for creativity to feel fulfilling.

Sometimes I just need to be making something.

And this summer, that “something” has been BIG.

Literally.

Meet My Gigantones!

Since July, I have been working on a very special project: Gigantones!

If you’re not familiar with them, Gigantones are enormous traditional figures that are an important part of the festivities in Viana do Castelo, Portugal.

And this project is especially meaningful to me because Viana do Castelo is where I was born. It is the place I still think of as home—a place that holds my family roots, my childhood memories and so much of my Portuguese identity. Even though I live in Canada, Viana is a place I return to many summers, and every time I’m there, it still feels like coming home. ❤️

So creating my own Gigantones has been about much more than making something big and colourful. It has been a way of connecting my love of crafting with a piece of my heritage and the place that will always be part of me.

The tradition of Gigantones and Cabeçudos in the Romaria de Nossa Senhora d’Agonia dates back to 1893, when the tradition was brought to Viana from Galicia in neighbouring Spain. Today, Gigantones and Cabeçudos are still one of the highlights of the annual Festa de Nossa Senhora d’Agonia, parading through the streets to the incredible sound of drums and loved by generations of people who grew up with them.

And if you know anything about me, you probably won't be surprised that I couldn't simply leave the idea alone.

I wanted to create my own modern 2026 interpretation.

She may have had a little Botox and filler; he has been mewing that jawline. 😂

I wanted to take something deeply rooted in Portuguese tradition and give it a fresh, colourful and contemporary personality while still respecting the spirit of the originals.

So, since July, I have been designing, building, painting and figuring out all the little details that would bring my vision to life.

And let me tell you… they are BIG.

Much bigger than anything I've ever made for this blog!

There were plenty of moments when I wondered what on earth I had gotten myself into. 😂 But there were also so many moments when I stood back, looked at what I had created and thought, “I actually made that!”

And that feeling never gets old.

Supplies used:
Heads - Paper Mâché - newspaper, all-purpose flour, water, white craft glue, acrylic paints
Body - Frame made from PVC parts, wheels
Oufits - Broadcloth
Gold Chain - Cable
Gold pieces - Designed and cut using the Silhouette Cameo
(leave me a comment if you want more details)

The Big Debut!

A few weeks ago, after months of planning, building, painting and wondering if I had completely lost my mind, my Gigantones finally made their debut! 😂❤️

Our Portuguese community hosted a Santoinho-inspired Portuguese night, bringing together so many of the things that make our festas special: great food, music, dancing, Portuguese traditions, Gigantones and, of course, champarreão!

After working on them since July, it was such a surreal feeling to finally see them standing there and being enjoyed by our community. I couldn't have asked for a better debut.

I also created the Coração de Viana (Heart of Viana) and chain that hung above the stage, using my Silhouette Cameo. It was another little way to bring a piece of Viana into the celebration.

But I Had to Make Them Move!

One of the biggest differences between my Gigantones and the traditional ones you see in Portugal is that mine have wheels!

Traditional Gigantones are carried by people underneath them, balancing the enormous figures on their shoulders as they parade and dance through the streets. I wanted mine to have that same larger-than-life presence, but I also wanted them to be practical enough for us to actually move them around our event.

So, naturally, I put them on wheels.

I built the wheeled base underneath the frame and designed the skirts to hide everything underneath. On the night of the event, my sister climbed inside the woman Gigantone while I slipped in behind the man, underneath the frame and behind the skirting.

And then we started walking around the dance floor.

From the outside, it looked like the two Gigantones were gliding across the floor all on their own! It was such a fun effect, especially when they started moving with the music.

There is one little detail that is difficult to see in the photographs: the vests have cut-outs in the front that allow the person inside to see—but only straight ahead.

So yes… navigating them was definitely an adventure! 😂 You really have to trust the person beside you and know where you're going because your view is very limited.

Thankfully, my sister and I managed to work together pretty well, and watching the two Gigantones glide around the dance floor was one of my favourite parts of the night.

That was when I finally realized… they worked!

All those months of measuring, cutting, building, painting, problem-solving and figuring out how everything would work had finally come together. Seeing them standing there was one thing, but seeing them move was something completely different.

From Cards to Gigantones

I think this past year has taught me something important about creativity.

Sometimes we have a very specific idea of what a “crafter” is supposed to be doing. For me, that used to mean cards—beautiful little pieces of paper art, shakers, die cuts, stamping, colouring and tiny details.

And I still love all of those things. I miss making cards. I miss sitting down with a new stamp set and losing track of time.

But I've also discovered that being creative isn't about the particular thing you're making. It's about having an idea and figuring out how to bring it into the world.

This year, that has meant decorating community events, creating something enormous instead of something that fits in an envelope, volunteering my time and sharing my creativity with the people around me.

It has also meant finding a way to keep doing what I love while respecting what my eyes and my new schedule allow.

So, although I Love Doing All Things Crafty may look a little different these days, the crafty part of me is still very much here.

She's just making bigger things! ❤️

I hope you'll stick around because I can't wait to share more photos of the Gigantones and the process behind making them. There was a LOT that went into these two!

And who knows? Maybe one day my eyes and my schedule will let me return to making cards more regularly.

For now, I'm going to enjoy this new chapter, spend time with my family, celebrate our Portuguese culture and keep creating whenever inspiration strikes.

Thank you to everyone who has continued to follow along, even when I haven't been posting as often. It truly means so much to me.

Happy crafting, friends—and VIVA Portugal!❤️

Creative Pause: A Personal Update

Hi friends,

I wanted to take a moment to share a personal update with you all, especially those who have so kindly reached out to check in.

Over the past while, I’ve been quieter than usual—both here and on social media. The reason for my break from cardmaking has been due to the condition of my cornea. The strain on my eyes made it increasingly difficult to create, and I knew I had to pause and take care of myself.

A few weeks ago, I underwent a cornea transplant. It all happened so fast—one evening I got the call, and less than 48 hours later, I was in surgery. I had been on the transplant list for over a year, and while the wait felt long at times, I was incredibly grateful (and a little shocked) when the moment finally came. I’m happy to share that the surgery went well.

I’m now in the early stages of recovery, which will be a slow and delicate process. Full healing will take up to a year, and during this time, I’ll be focusing on rest and letting my body do what it needs to do.

As for cardmaking—I haven’t let it go completely. Creating still brings me joy, and I know I’ll return to it when the time is right. I just don’t know yet when (or if) I’ll be back to sharing regularly online. For now, I’m giving myself permission to take things slow, without pressure.

Thank you again to everyone who has reached out. Your kind words have meant more than you know. Stepping back from my phone and the online world has actually been a much-needed reset—and it’s reminded me how important it is to protect our well-being in all its forms.

With heartfelt thanks,
Ilda 💛

Butterflies & Elegance Cards | Country Cottage Release | Honey Bee Stamps

Butterflies & Elegance Cards | Country Cottage Release | Honey Bee Stamps

I’m so excited to share two stunning cards I created featuring products from Honey Bee Stamps’ new Country Cottage Release. This release is filled with timeless elegance, perfect for creating heartfelt, handmade cards that feel extra special.

Today’s cards showcase the magical Lovely Layers: Butterflies set, which truly steals the show with its dreamy dimension and radiant color. Also, make sure you join the 👉 Instagram Hop to celebrate the Release and for a chance at winning one of two - $50 Gift Card to the HBS Shop. Let’s take a closer look at each design!

Card One: “Life is Sweeter with a Mom Like You”

This first card is a floral fantasy! I started with the Lovely Layers: Bold Background Chinoiserie to build a beautifully intricate background full of texture and soft florals. The layers and soft ink blending on the leaves and flowers add so much depth and natural charm.

I then framed the sentiment using one of the elegant dies from the Antique Layering Frames set. The sentiment itself—“Life is sweeter with a Mom like you”—is from the So Special Stamps and Dies set and is die cut with the coordinating die for a perfect fit.

Handmade floral card featuring layered white roses, green vines, and rainbow butterflies with a sentiment that reads “Life is sweeter with a Mom like you” in the center.

To bring this card to life, I added three butterflies from the Lovely Layers: Butterflies set. These were ink blended using Distress Oxide Inks in vibrant rainbow hues. A few gold gem stickers complete the card and add a touch of sparkle.

Handmade floral card featuring layered white roses, green vines, and rainbow butterflies with a sentiment that reads “Life is sweeter with a Mom like you” in the center.

Card Two: “You Are So Dear to Me”

For the second card, I wanted to go for something soft and regal. I used another frame from the Antique Layering Frames set to create the focal point, layering ornate die cuts for an elegant finish. The sentiment, “You are so dear to me,” is again from the So Special Stamps and Dies set.

Two butterflies dance across the card, colored with the same Distress Oxide Ink rainbow palette. To tie the whole look together, I pressed Bee Creative Metallic Gold Ink into their embossed details, creating a luxurious effect. Gold gem stickers were also added here to enhance the corners and add sparkle.

Elegant handmade card with ornate white and gold frames, two rainbow butterflies, and the sentiment “You are so dear to me” at the center.

Ink Blending Details

For all the butterflies, I used a bright rainbow blend of Distress Oxide Inks—including shades like Picked Raspberry, Wilted Violet, Broken China, Peacock Feathers, Squeezed Lemonade, and Black Soot. After blending, I splattered them with metallic gold liquid. This added a subtle shimmer to the butterflies.

These cards were such a joy to make and are perfect for Mother’s Day, thank you notes, or just sending a little love. The new Country Cottage Release has everything you need to add elegance and warmth to your cardmaking.

Thank you for stopping by and until next time... Happy Crafting!

Hello Spring - Blackout Technique using watercolors | Honey Bee Stamps

Handmade spring greeting card featuring colorful watercolor flowers and hummingbirds on a black background, with metallic "Hello Spring" die-cut sentiment; created using Honey Bee Stamps Chinoiserie 3D Embossing Folder and Karin Brushmarker PROs.

Hello friends!

Today I’m sharing a vibrant spring card featuring the Blackout Technique — and I’m thrilled because it showcases some gorgeous products from the upcoming Country Cottage Release by Honey Bee Stamps! The Cottage Countryside Release will go live on 4/30 after the Live Release Party on YouTube at 8 pm EST. For those of you who love visuals, I will be sharing the Reel Here on Release night!

For this card, I used the stunning new Chinoiserie 3D Embossing Folder to create the background. After embossing a piece of Birtol paper, I colored the impressed images using Karin Brushmarker PROs along with a waterbrush to fill in the embossed wells. (If you'd like to see a similar technique in action, check out my earlier post HERE).

Once the background was fully colored and dry, before moving onto the Blackout step, I carefully ran the panel through my diecut/embossing machine again with the embossing folder, making sure to line it up perfectly. This re-embossing helps sharpen the beautiful details that can sometimes soften after applying water.

I then applied Versafine Fine Pigment Ink - Onyx Black by rubbing it over the entire panel, letting those bright, happy spring colors burst against the dark background. It's such a bold and stunning effect! To the background, I then added gold and white splatters.

For the greeting:

I used a metallic foil cardstock for extra shine and layered the sentiments with their coordinating shadows for dimension and definition.

To complete the card, I added a few iridescent gems, and painted the bodies of the Hummingbirds with Bee Creative Liquid Shimmer Watercolor to catch the light and add a bit of playful sparkle.

I hope this card inspires you to give the Blackout Technique a try! It’s a bit messy but so much fun — and the final effect is so worth it.

Keep an eye out for the upcoming Country Cottage Release from Honey Bee Stamps — you’re going to love everything!

Thank you for stopping by and until next time... Happy Crafting!

Other Supplies

Karin Brushmarker PRO  (used to color in stamped images)

Bristol Paper

ZIG Watercolor BrusH2O Detailer (used to watercolor and blend out the Karin markers)

Gelly Roll Classic Point Pens (highlights)

Tim Holtz Distress Sprayer (background spray)

Versafine Fine Pigment Ink - Onyx Black (waterproof ink for watercoloring)

Distress Oxide Inks (Mowed Lawn, Broken China)

The Pop-Up Surprise: DIY Spring Mechanism

Now, here’s where the real fun begins—this card features a partial pop-up element that makes the puppy in the wagon come to life with a gentle bounce!

I created a spring mechanism using the connector pieces from the Vintage Gift Card Box Honey Cuts die set. Here’s how:

  1. Die Cut Two Connector Pieces – I cut two identical connector pieces from the set.

  2. Shape the Spring – I joined the ends to form a standing, 3D hollow rectangle.

  3. Create the Spring Action – I added diagonal creases at each end of the rectangle. This allows it to collapse flat when pressed and spring back when released—just like a paper accordion!

  4. Assembly – One end was glued to the card base, and the other to the grass layer.

This clever little structure creates dimension while still keeping the card mailable—a total win!

This card is sure to bring smiles and tail wags! Thank you for stopping by and until next time... Happy Crafting!

Weighted Spinner Hamster Wheel Card | Honey Bee Stamps

A handmade interactive greeting card featuring a spinning hamster wheel. The card showcases die-cut elements from Honey Bee Stamps, including a layered hamster and hamster house. The wheel, made with acetate for a transparent effect, is attached to a spinning mechanism that allows it to move. The card is decorated with gem stickers and includes a fun sentiment that reads, 'Anyone can be cool, awesome takes practice!

Hello, crafty friends! Today, I’m excited to share an adorable interactive card featuring the Lovely Layers: Hamster House Dies, the Lovely Layers: Hamster, and a fun sentiment from the You’ve Got a Friend Stamp Set—all part of Honey Bee Stamps’ brand-new Pet-tastic Release!

This card is extra special because it has a spinning hamster wheel, bringing a playful, interactive element to the design. I used the Sweet Stacks: Circles to create the spinning mechanism and a clever trick to add weight, ensuring the wheel returns to its neutral position when not in motion. Want to watch this card come together? Check out my Reels HERE

CARD RECIPE
Lovely Layers: Hamster (Honey Bee Stamps)
Sweet Stacks: Circles Dies (Honey Bee Stamps)
Simply Spring Sticker Set (Honey Bee Stamps)
Cardstock (white and assorted colors for die-cut elements)
Acetate (for transparent wheel effect)
Foam dots/foam tape
Button (for spinner mechanism)
Dime (for added weight)
Black pen (for splatter effect)
Ink (for sentiment)
Glue or strong adhesive

The wheel, made with acetate for a transparent effect, is attached to a spinning mechanism that allows it to move. The card is decorated with gem stickers and includes a fun sentiment that reads, 'Anyone can be cool, awesome takes practice!

Creating the Spinning Mechanism

To achieve this fun effect, I followed these steps:

  • Die-cut the front panel – I cut a circle in the top layer of the card using the Sweet Stacks: Circles Dies.
  • Die-cut and assemble the hamster and wheel – I used the Lovely Layers: Hamster and Lovely Layers: Hamster House Dies to piece together the adorable hamster and its wheel.
  • Make the wheel transparent – To add a realistic effect, I used Acetate as the top layer of the wheel. Since the glue dries clear, it remains unnoticeable.
  • Build the spinner base – glue a button to a larger circle, set aside to dry. This will be used in the next step.
  • Layer the card front – Add foam tape behind the front panel, and place the button layer behind the opening so it peeks through the die cut circle opening. Glue to the card base. The foam layer will allow for smooth movement.
  • Balance the movement – To help the wheel return to its neutral position after spinning, I glued a dime to the bottom of the hamster wheel, adding just enough weight.
  • Attach the wheel – Add a foam dot to the top of the button and then attach the hamster wheel on top, slightly elevating it.
  • Adjust the spin – If you want less movement, use a button slightly smaller than the opening. To allow freer spinning, add foam behind the front panel for elevation.

Puppy Kisses & Lucky Wishes | A St. Paddy’s Inspired Card | Honey Bee Stamps

A handmade St. Patrick’s Day card with a green and white heart-patterned background. The card features a glittery die-cut sentiment reading “Lucky to Have You” in green script, layered over vellum. At the top, there is a heart-shaped embellishment with a fussy-cut watercolor dog, its paws and face tinted green to mimic playing in the grass. The design is accented with shamrocks made from tiny hearts and finished with green gem embellishments for sparkle. The card has a cheerful, festive feel with a mix of textures and layers.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! What better way to celebrate than with a heartfelt, handmade card? This glittery green beauty is full of charm, featuring a lucky pup who’s clearly been having fun in the fresh-cut grass! With layered hearts, sparkly sentiments, and clover accents, this card is the perfect way to tell someone just how lucky you are to have them in your life.

CARD RECIPE

Background
I started with a vibrant background using the Scattered Hearts Stencil. The first layer was blended with Mowed Lawn Distress Oxide Ink, and for extra shimmer and texture, I added a second layer using Slime Green Paper Glaze.

Sentiment
The sentiment, Lucky to Have You Honey Cuts, was die-cut from glitter paper that I ink-blended to match the background using Mowed Lawn Distress Oxide Ink. This ensured a cohesive look while adding shimmer to the design. To make the sentiment stand out, I placed it on a soft vellum shadow, which helps it pop against the busy background without overwhelming the design.

Focal Image
The adorable pup comes from the Tail Waggers Rubber Stamp Set, stamped using water-reactive ink and then watercolored. To enhance the St. Paddy’s theme, I added green hues to the pup’s paws, legs, and face to mimic the look of playing in fresh-cut grass. I initially used the Tail Wagger Honey Cuts die but opted for a hand-fussy cut look without the white border.

The design is accented with shamrocks made from tiny hearts and finished with green gem embellishments for sparkle. The card has a cheerful, festive feel with a mix of textures and layers.

Embellishments
The hearts framing the pup are from the Lace Heart Layering Frames Honey Cuts Set, cut from pink and green cardstock for a layered effect. For a fun shamrock detail, I arranged tiny hearts from the Bold Background: Vines of Love Honey Cuts into clover shapes. To finish, I added some sparkle using green gems from the Real Rainbow Sticker Set.

Foam (dots for dimension)

A handmade pop-up aquarium card featuring colorful die-cut fish, a castle, and coral inside a layered 3D tank. The sentiment on the front reads "You're fintastic."

1. Die Cut the Fish and Add Color
Start by die-cutting the fish from white cardstock using the Lovely Layers: Fish dies. Use Distress Oxide inks and ink blending brushes to add vibrant color to each fish. Once colored, piece the fish layers together to create dimension.

2. Die Cut the Aquarium Layers
Die cut three black layers of the aquarium using the Lovely Layers: Tank dies. To the topmost layer, adhere a piece of acetate to mimic the glass front of an actual aquarium.

3. Create the Pop-Up Springs
For the pop-up effect, cut four strips of cardstock measuring 5" x 1". Score them every 1/4 inch and fold them into a spring-like shape. These will be used between the aquarium layers to add dimension.

4. Assemble the Background and Base Layer
Attach the back layer of the aquarium to the card base.

Use a spray bottle to add water splatter effects to the blended background.
Attach some fish die cuts directly onto the background to give depth.

5. Add the Middle Aquarium Layer
Glue two pop-up springs onto the back layer and attach the second aquarium layer.
Position and adhere the castle and coral elements from the Aquarium Add-On set.
For a fun floating effect, glue a fish onto a small acetate strip and attach it between the layers.

6. Complete the Aquarium Scene
Attach the front layer of the aquarium with another set of pop-up springs.
Add final fish, coral, and decorative die cuts.
Use wood-textured embossed pieces to create the top and bottom of the tank.
Apply glue along the bottom edge, then sprinkle chunky glitter to resemble the shimmering aquarium gravel.

The inside of the handmade pop-up aquarium card, displaying a stamped sentiment that reads "Sending birthday fishes" on a white background, surrounded by seashells and greenery.

7. Add the Sentiments

On the inside of the card, stamp the “Sending birthday fishes” sentiment with black ink for a fun finishing touch.
