80's Themed Cake + Bonus Timlapse Videos

Hey Everyone ;)

I have a sweet treat for you all today... Literally!
I was asked by my BOSS a while ago to make an 80's themed Birthday Cake for her BIL's surprise 60th party. How could you say no to your boss, right? Well... she's lucky I really like her, plus she is also my friend and a great Nurse Manager!

So, check out my 80's themed cake. How RAD is that?!

Wouldn't be the 80's without a Ghetto Blaster!

Do you remember the rubix cube? I was never able to solve those suckers... I always cheated and pealed off the stickers when I got frustrated, lol!

And of course I had to use my Silhouette to add a little paper to the cake.
Love the look, plus it saved me tons of time from trying to cut out intricate shapes and letters out of fondant!

Oh, and what about Pac Man?
It must have been one of the first video games I had ever played as a little girl!

Well for those interested in what is actually inside the cake
The rubix cube is made up of rice krispies treats
Top layers- Vanilla & Chocolate flavored - baked in two 6 inch round pans
Bottom layer - Vanilla & Chocolate flavored - baked in a 10 inch round pans
Entire cake was frosted with vanilla butter cream icing and covered with fondant.

As a BONUS for those of you that want to see how I created the cake, I made a 2 part timelapse video to condense approximately 12 hours into a little over 12 minutes!

(Everybody always wants to know how I do it, so here you go! Enjoy!!!)

Hope you enjoyed my 80's Themed Cake today, even if you didn't get to eat it!

Wine Barrel Birthday Cake

Wine anyone? OK then, now how about some cake to go with that wine?

Today I am sharing with you a wine barrel cake I made for my father's 60th Birthday party. As you've may have guessed he love his homemade wine. So I thought this would be perfect  cake for him. Actually one of my earliest memories was of my dad stomping grapes with his feet the old fashioned way as they did back in Portugal, I think I was about 3 or 4!

This cake was made up up 3 layers - 1 vanilla and 2 chocolate. Baked in 6 inch pans. All frosted with vanilla butter cream icing and covered with fondant.

To create the wood grain look, I just scratched up the fondant using a fork and painted it with brown icing gel.

The label and the number 60 was created using my Silhouette Cameo. So much easier than having to make it out of fondant and icing!

Hope you liked my dad's Wine Barrel Birthday Cake!
Happy Birthday Dad, LOVE YOU!

Nurse's Week Cake - Happy Birthday Florence Nightingale | DIY Cakes

Happy Nurse's Week to all my fellow Nurses!

Many of you may not know this, but when I'm not crafting I'm probably working at the Cross Cancer Institute. I have been an RN there for over 16 years, and have loved every minute of it. My patients and coworkers have made that possible, truly they are simply the best!

I was honored to be asked by our Local CCI Union Reps to make a cake for this week's festivities. Here is the cake I came up with for the occasion! The theme for the event was Florence Nightingale's Birthday.  I'm so happy with how it all came together.

The red symbol on the front of the cake is our Union's logo - UNA (United Nurses of Alberta)

Since this cake is in honor of Florence Nightingale's Birthday, I thought it would be cute to incorporate her throughout the cake.

Happy to see Ms. Nightingale takes her calcium, LOL!

Unfortunately, it looks like she may be a Cancer patient,  poor Flo!
At 194 years old, it was bound to happen!
(All the patients at our hospital receive a red card)

This cake measures, approx 14" in height.
The bottom layer is an 11" round almond flavored white cake the top a 10" round chocolate cake.
The entire cake was frosted with vanilla buttercream icing, covered and decorated with fondant.

Minecraft Cake | DIY Cakes

Last week my son entered his double-digit years!
The BIG 10!!! I'm still wondering how this could have happened so quickly, at this rate he will be an adult soon! It feels just like I brought him home from the hospital last week 😥

This year for his 10th Birthday he wanted a Minecraft Themed Cake. Like so many other kids, he is a huge fan of the game and loves playing it! I honestly don't know what the point of the game is but I like that it is a very creative game, and I'm all about creativity!

Here is his Creeper/Minecraft Cake!

This cake was baked in 9" square cake pans.

Bottom 3 layers were chocolate flavored and the top 3 vanilla. The entire cake was frosted with vanilla buttercream icing, covered and decorated with fondant.

Measured 6" tall.

Here is my big Boy!
With the cutest smile on his face as he's trying to hold up this heavy cake! For those of you that follow me on Instagram, you would have seen this picture I posted last night ;)

Angry Bird Fondant Cake for a 60 Year Old

Today is mom's best friend's birthday. Aida, who also happens to be my God Mother and is truly a very special lady! She helped raise us and I love her very much. I wish her a very special 60th Birthday today!

A few weeks ago her daughter told me she was secretly addicted to the Angry Birds Game... So she asked if I would make her an Angry Birds Themed Cake. Ooops, I guess she has now been outed, I hope she's not ANGRY! Hehehehe, Oink, snort!

So here it is... I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!!!

Here are more pictures of the cake from different angles :)

For those of you that are curious about how I made it, here are a few pictures I took of the cake along the way. I'll just briefly explain them.
  • The first thing I started with was modeling chocolate. Click here for the recipe. Once the chocolate was ready I rolled out some different sized balls. At this point, I also made my wood logs. (Leave all your pieces to air dry overnight)
  • Once the chocolate had hardened, I covered the balls with different colors of fondant. (I didn't by all these different colors, I just started with white fondant and mixed it with icing colors until I achieved the color I wanted)
  • Then all that is left are the details on the birds. (I referred to a picture I had printed to that I could look at)
  • Bake, ice and cover your cake with a crumb coat.
  • Cover the cake with the fondant and have fun assembling!
That's pretty much it! These kinds of cakes can be time-consuming. This one took me about 6 hours to make, but it's so worth the end result! Hope she is going to like it!

I hope you like my take on the Angry Birds Cake!
Have a great weekend :)

Hawaiian Barbie Luau Fondant Birthday Cake

Hello everyone!

Sorry I have been M.I.A. for the last week or so... crazy busy these days with work, house duties and after school activities!

I am soooo excited to share with you all a cake I finished today. It is for my beautiful God Daughter Aleina's Luau Birthday party this weekend.

Since she loves Barbie, her mom asked me if I could make her a Luau Barbie Cake. Here are some pictures of the cake. I'm so happy with how it turned out! Thanks to Duff from Ace of Cakes, the Cake Boss and even Youtube for inspiring me to experiment with fondant. Everything I have learned about cakes has been through trial and error. I can safely say I've come a very long way from the first cake that I made when my daughter had her first birthday :)

Isn't it pretty?!?
The skirt part of the cake is a white cake and the round bottom layer is half chocolate and half white, all frosted with American buttercream and covered with fondant.
