Nurse's Week Cake - Happy Birthday Florence Nightingale | DIY Cakes

Happy Nurse's Week to all my fellow Nurses!

Many of you may not know this, but when I'm not crafting I'm probably working at the Cross Cancer Institute. I have been an RN there for over 16 years, and have loved every minute of it. My patients and coworkers have made that possible, truly they are simply the best!

I was honored to be asked by our Local CCI Union Reps to make a cake for this week's festivities. Here is the cake I came up with for the occasion! The theme for the event was Florence Nightingale's Birthday.  I'm so happy with how it all came together.

The red symbol on the front of the cake is our Union's logo - UNA (United Nurses of Alberta)

Since this cake is in honor of Florence Nightingale's Birthday, I thought it would be cute to incorporate her throughout the cake.

Happy to see Ms. Nightingale takes her calcium, LOL!

Unfortunately, it looks like she may be a Cancer patient,  poor Flo!
At 194 years old, it was bound to happen!
(All the patients at our hospital receive a red card)

This cake measures, approx 14" in height.
The bottom layer is an 11" round almond flavored white cake the top a 10" round chocolate cake.
The entire cake was frosted with vanilla buttercream icing, covered and decorated with fondant.

Christmas Paper Cake Floral Toppers | Cake a la SVGCuts | DIY Cakes

I am SOOOOO super excited today to be sharing with you my first guest post for SVGCuts, WHOOP, WHOOP! If I could do a backflip I would, lol ;)

If you didn't know it before, you should know now that I LOVE SVG Cuts and have been a huge fan since finding them back in 2011! In fact they were one of the reasons I started blogging. I have always loved to craft and after making some of the coolest things out of paper with their files, I was hooked and I knew I had to share it with others!

So for this project I thought it would be awesome to mash up two of my favorite crafts... Paper and cake decorating! Well, what do you think of my Christmas Cake a la SVG Cuts? It almost looks too good to eat doesn't it?!

Please check out my guest post on the SVGCuts blog for complete instructions :)

I would have never been able to create these gorgeous flowers out of fondant, but paper... piece of cake, haha!

When I was a little girl, the kids in the family would always fight over the sugar flowers on the cake. Did anyone else do that? Maybe we were just weird?

I'm sure if you make some like these out of paper, the moms might have to fight the kids for them, lol!

If any of you have ever made a fondant flower, you will know how time-consuming and difficult it can be. Even when they are done they can be quite fragile. That's why you pay cake decorators the big bucks! But why pay them when you can do it yourself?! If you already are a paper crafter all you need now is a cake! If you can't make a fondant cake, don't worry bake your favorite cake and sprinkle some icing sugar over it, or even easier buy one and just embellish it!

Just think of the cakes you could make using paper toppers, the possibilities are endless!

Make the flowers like you would for any other project. Then all you have to do is hot glue them to the end of a toothpick or a skewer. By doing this, you elevate the flowers and protect the papers from any grease absorption that may happen when using paper. See the image below.

Celestial Twin Baby Shower Cake and Decor | DIY Cakes and Party Decor | SVGCuts Files

This weekend I had the privilege of making the sweetest cake for my friend Emilia's baby sister Gabriella, who is expecting TWINS! If you are planning a baby shower hopefully this post might help give you some more ideas :)

The cake turned out super CUTE!

The color theme for the Shower was blue and yellow. So the first thought that came to my mind was the sky and the moon, then came the set of twin baby feet hiding under the clouds.

Aren't those little feet adorable? And what about those ruffled diapers...  double the diapers, double the fun!

By far my favorite part of the cake was making the swirly clouds!
So easy and fun to make :)

Here are some cake details...

Bottom baked in an 11 inch round form - chocolate cake
Top baked in an 11 inch round form - white cake
Frosted with vanilla buttercream icing
Covered in fondant

Since I had a hand in helping my friend Emilia set up for the party, here are a few more pics I thought I would share.  I can't and won't take credit for all the work because this was definitely a team effort, my part was the cake table and its decorations. The rest was done by Emilia and the family of the mother to be. They took care of the centerpiece diaper cakes and table decor, Thank you gifts, games, prizes, desserts, and food... great job ladies!

Little Monkey Birthday Cake

So it's been another crazy, busy day for me... cake, crafting, and a shift at the hospital. The great thing I had my little 5-year-old Maia (Sous Chef), help me clean up! So here is what I have been working on today!

Tomorrow is my friend Karen's son's first birthday... She asked me to make him a monkey themed birthday cake! I think it turned out great! I hope the "little monkey" likes it! Happy birthday Samuel!

More views... this is a 4 layer chocolate and white cake on the inside. Filled with buttercream icing and covered with fondant. Yummy!

Here is how I made the banner... I created the little flags using the draw tools in the Silhouette Studio Designer Edition and then cut them out with the Cameo. I then glued down the top tabs to the twine and then hung it up between two bamboo skewers.

Thanks for visiting!
